Warana Temple

It’s another day and another travelling to one of the most ancient temple and area in Sri lanka..

Mangalathiriya is the village that is age-old, artistic  is situated in gampaha district 15 minutes far-away from nittambuwa town closed to Kandy – Colombo road.Mangala viharaya is the former name of warana viharaya.

Warana,the word was created by a combination of “waa” “arana” in Sinhala oral language.

Warana viharaya is very beautiful temple with huge peaks, boulders and caves.

Folklores say that there was huge bird which is from Himalaya was living there and a bird was used to eat fishes on there peak called Idam-gala.The shouting of bird in the night is not good one for villagers and it was cloying.Then high priest of the temple took measures to escape this bird by stanzing.It is wonderful story which is very famous here.

The village is very valued itself with epigraphs, stelas, inscriptions, temporalities etc.

• In Era of King Valagamba this was a safe area(103-89)
• With King valagamba’s kingshiping he made the temple(89-77)
• Adventing of Hikkaduwe Sri sumangala thero(1924)
• Arrival of Anagarika dharmapala
• Adventing of kahawe Rathanasaara thero(1928)

This is only brief expression about this great historical temple. Hundreds of rumours are there and villagers have much knowledge about it’s former time. wonderful to feel there attractive surroundings.
